Ask the Experts: Peer Group Considerations in an Evolving Market for Talent
Historically, companies have focused on one benchmarking peer group to analyze target pay levels for executives and directors, program designs, relative performance, etc. This peer group was often limited to companies within a narrow set of industry and revenue criteria. Given the recent volume of employee turnover and increasingly competitive market for talent, Committees are reconsidering the standard peer group approach. What questions should your board be asking?

Join this Ask the Experts session with Mike Meyer and David Bixby at Meridian Compensation Partners to discuss timely questions, including:
• Should executive pay benchmarking include a general industry market reference point in addition to industry-specific peer data?
• While pay level benchmarking requires size-appropriate peers, should a second reference group of aspirational peers be developed for program design comparisons?
• Given the rising prevalence of relative performance metrics (e.g., relative TSR), how do we determine appropriate performance comparators?
• How reliant should we be on peer market data (e.g., median) when establishing pay levels and program designs?
